American Chopper Frameset - FEA
Linear static analysis of Learnsolidworks.com American chopper frameset. The analysis assumed the frameset to be manufactured from 4130 steel tubing, min. yield strength ca. 460 MPa (ca. 66,700 psi). Cylindrical constraints were applied at the front and rear axle locations, radial fixed, circumferential free, axial fixed. Loading assumed a local combined engine and transmission weight of ca. 1079 N (ca. 242 lbf), a local rider weight of ca. 981 N (ca. 220 lbf), and global standard gravity. With mesh refinement, the analysis converged to within 2% on max. displacement and max. von Mises stress. Despite the unorthodox frame layout (unilateral rear triangle with cantilever rear axle), the analysis indicated the design to be fit for (road cruising?) purpose, with a max. displacement of ca. 4.82 mm (ca. 0.1898 in), and a max. von Mises stress of ca. 231 MPa (ca. 33,504 psi).
